Strengthening Climate Adaptation Through IFNUS Projects in Kitui

‎Efforts to enhance climate resilience and improve food and nutrition security in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) are gaining traction in Kitui County through school and community-driven initiatives supported under the IFNUS Project.

‎The Project for Improvement of Food and Nutrition Security through Building Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands in Kenya (IFNUS), implemented by the State Department for ASALs and Regional Development, seeks to build adaptive capacity among local communities by promoting climate-smart agricultural practices.

‎A team from the State Department, led by Dr. Kinuthia, Director of Strategic Programmes Development, visited Tiva Primary School in Kitui County to evaluate the progress of IFNUS activities. The school has set up small-scale agricultural enterprises—including rabbit, chicken, and turkey rearing, alongside a vibrant vegetable garden—that are improving students’ nutrition, enhancing resilience, and providing hands-on agricultural learning experiences. The initiatives also support the school feeding programme and encourage learners to replicate the practices at home.

‎In Kwa Vonza Ward, Kitui East Sub-county, farmer Domitila Kanini  showcased the benefits of pasture reseeding in improving livestock production and household resilience. Her farm, which supports Friesian cows, calves, and goats, has recorded improved fodder yields and better livestock performance. Encouraged by the positive outcomes, she plans to expand the pasture area in the coming rainy season.

‎Speaking during the visit, Dr. Kinuthia noted that such initiatives reflect the Department’s commitment to empowering ASAL communities to adapt to changing climatic conditions through sustainable, locally led solutions.

‎The IFNUS Project continues to play a key role in enhancing food and nutrition security while strengthening the resilience of dryland communities against the impacts of climate change.
