Masalani Water Project: A New Hope for Residents
The State department of the Asals and Regional development PS, Kello Harsama officially commissioned The Masalani Water Project in Ijara, Garissa County. This marked a significant step toward addressing the region's long-standing water shortages. This 20.3 million initiative, aims to provide sustainable access to clean water for over 12,500 residents across four villages.
This project also includes a 4.4 km pipeline, a 120,000-litre elevated water tank, and a water kiosk, all designed to alleviate the burden on residents, particularly women and children, who have historically trekked long distances for water. This new infrastructure is expected to transform daily lives by making clean water readily available and affordable.
A key aspect of the project is its community-led Participatory Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA) process, which allowed residents to voice their needs and prioritize the initiative. This approach fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment among community members, ensuring that their input shaped the solution to their water access challenges.
The Masalani Water Project is set to improve health outcomes by reducing waterborne diseases, provide economic relief by saving families money previously spent on water, and empower women and children by freeing up time for education and other productive activities. As the project begins operations, it stands as a beacon of hope, promising a future where access to clean water is a reality for the residents of Masalani.
