IGAD Launches 2025 Food Crises Report
The state department of ASALs PS, Kello Harsama as host PS opened the launch of the IGAD Regional Focus of the 2025 Global Report on Food Crises in Nairobi. The event brought together regional leaders, policymakers, humanitarian actors, and technical experts to reflect on the rising threat of food insecurity across IGAD member states.
In his opening remarks, the Principal Secretary, Mr. Kello Harsama, CBS, highlighted the urgency of coordinated action to address hunger in the region.
“The number of people facing acute food insecurity continues to rise due to conflict, climate shocks, and economic disruptions. Nothing short of collective effort will save lives and secure the future of vulnerable populations in IGAD member countries,” said PS Harsama.
The report’s findings revealed that millions of households remain at risk of severe hunger and malnutrition, with displacement and climate extremes emerging as key drivers. Speakers at the launch underscored the need for long-term solutions beyond short-term humanitarian aid.
Among the Key priorities discussed included Strengthening early warning systems and regional data-sharing platforms, expanding investment in climate-smart agriculture to build resilience, supporting displaced and hard-to-reach communities more effective and promoting stronger partnerships among governments, international agencies, civil society, and local communities.
PS Kello reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to aligning national policies with IGAD’s regional strategies, noting that responses must be community-driven and measurable to have lasting impact.
The launch brought together IGAD officials, representatives from development partners, humanitarian agencies, and local organizations, all united in the goal of advancing food security and resilience in the Horn of Africa.
