Cabinet Secretary Beatrice Askul Moe, has urged communities in Marsabit to embrace culture as a foundation for peace and cohesion.
Speaking as Chief Guest at the Nagayo-Maklacha Cultural and Food Festival in Butiye, CS Moe said cultural celebrations provide crucial platforms for unity among diverse communities while strengthening identity. The festival brought together 14 ethnic groups from across Marsabit County to showcase traditions, food, and heritage under the theme of peaceful coexistence.
The event featured traditional dances, songs, crafts, and cuisines, reflecting the county’s rich cultural tapestry.
Principal Secretary Kello Harsama, described culture as “the soul of the people and the foundation for sustainable growth.” He highlighted cultural tourism and the creative economy as pathways for empowering women and youth, while urging communities to abandon harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriage.
Other leaders present included Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali, County Commissioner James Kamau, ASALs Secretary Ambrose Lore, Mercy Corps Technical Support Director Blandina Bobson, and NAPAD Chairman Mohamed Ahmed Arai. Their participation underscored collaboration between government and development partners in advancing peace and inclusive growth in the ASAL regions.
For many participants, the Nagayo Festival was more than a cultural celebration it was a demonstration of solidarity in a county that has often faced ethnic tensions. Elders and youth alike voiced hope that such gatherings will continue to build unity and peaceful coexistence.
