15 Billion Trees Secretariat Ramps Up Awareness on NLER Strategy
The 15 Billion Trees Secretariat has wrapped up the second week of its nationwide sensitization mission on the National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration (NLER) Strategy 2023–2032, marking another milestone in efforts to accelerate Kenya’s ambitious tree-growing and restoration agenda.
The sensitization exercise, which targets State Departments, is designed to deepen understanding of the NLER Strategy while enhancing coordination and accountability in the implementation of landscape restoration initiatives. NLERs 2023-2024 also aimed at enhancing coordination & accountability in landscape restoration efforts, the Strategy outlines a clear roadmap with 11 key intervention areas& county specific targets to guide planning, resource mobilization & implementation at national& sub-national level.
According to the Secretariat, strengthening institutional awareness is a critical step in ensuring government agencies work in harmony towards the collective goal of restoring degraded ecosystems and supporting the government’s pledge to grow 15 billion trees by 2032.
Speaking during the close of the second week’s activities, officials emphasized that landscape restoration is not just about tree planting, but also about building resilience against climate change, improving livelihoods, and safeguarding water catchments and biodiversity.
The Secretariat has urged all State Departments to align their activities with the NLER Strategy and commit to measurable targets, noting that inter-agency collaboration will be key to delivering lasting impact.
The sensitization mission is expected to continue in the coming weeks, reaching more institutions and stakeholders to reinforce a whole-of-government approach to Kenya’s restoration efforts.
